Is Gin Healthy?
It’s the question on the lips of every budding fan of our favourite beverage; is gin healthy? Well if you’re looking to lose some weight then gin is a much better choice of drink than a pint of beer or a shot of liquor mixed with soft drinks. It’s well known that a single pint of beer can contain as many as 215 calories, and a Jack Daniels and Coke can be as high as 195. When drunk in quick succession, these drinks would take several hours of strenuous exercise to burn off.
That’s where gin comes in. Compared with other alcoholic beverages, gin is a remarkably low-calorie drink. Alcohol in general does contain a reasonable number of calories because these drinks are often cemented and distilled in natural starch and sugar. Moderation is therefore key here; it won’t make much of a difference if you have four or five gin and tonics a night!
How Do the Different Types of Alcohol Compare?
As shown above, a standard beer can offer a calorie count as high as 215. That’s nearly the same as a whole McDonald’s Cheeseburger! A glass of wine on the other hand can reach 126 calories, which is more than a whole tablespoon of peanut butter. These high calorie counts are the reason the ‘beer-belly’ problem exists. Many people don’t realise just how many calories they’re consuming.
It’s also important to note that the calories in alcohol are different to the ones that appear in food. Since they lack nutrition, you’ll still feel hungry afterwards, which is why it can be so deceptive. Furthermore, as your body prioritises the removal of alcohol from your system, your natural fat burning and nutrient absorbing processes are temporarily halted.
Now then, that slimline gin and tonic that you keep thinking about is only 56 calories. The variance in these numbers starts to add up on a night out, and definitely make the difference when you’re trying to relax with a single drink at home. A slimline gin is therefore a very good option if you’re looking to lose weight but still like to enjoy the odd single drink every now and then.
